Google has released an update to its Gmail app for Android, and it brings some welcomed features that have been long yearned for by avid Android users. The app now supports pinch-to-zoom, meaning you can zoom in on emails and read them without squinting, and Google also introduced new gestures that allow you to quickly delete or archive an email by swiping left or right.

Some of the features introduced in this latest update were ones that Android users have been waiting on ever since the G1 days, but finally, Gmail mobile users can rejoice. Other than the pinch-to-zoom and the new swipe gestures, the app now has the ability to “auto-fit” a message to your phone’s screen, and there’s also a new thumbnail view for attached images and videos.

ASUS has played a somewhat important role in the Android ecosystem, which includes its Nexus 7 endeavor with none other than Google. The Taiwan-based company looks to be going further, as Engadget spotted an FCC filing this weekend that exposes its plan to release a Google TV device. The FCC has approved ASUS’ new adapter dubbed the “Qube”, which is not really like any other Google TV device we’ve seen before. The Qube is more Roku-like, acting as a USB-dongle that could pair with an Android-based smartphone and separate keyboard or touchpad.

Earlier this month we learned that if Google does not agree to settle with the FTC over alleged abuses, it will be forced to face a formal complaint from the organization.

Bloomberg reports this afternoon that Google CEO Larry Page met with FTC officials today to discuss the investigation and to persuade them that the folks in Mountain View haven’t been breaking any antitrust laws. The report also adds that settlement talks have been ongoing for roughly a week.

The FTC has been looking into Google for alleged abuses regarding its large reach over the Internet for roughly two years. FTC Chairman Jonathan Leibowitz is requesting Google make an offer and “won’t accept a resolution short of a consent decree.”

Regarding the Google-Dish tie up that was reported last night, we just got word that this is really happening. While the details haven’t been finalized, Google is already deep into development on plans to roll out the service and have it live by mid-late 2013.

Google plans to make the service data-only with voice and SMS only being used as VoIP services, likely with Google Voice. Google of course already has its ISP feet on the ground with its Fiber rollout on the Stanford Campus and its just-opened Kansas City network.

The iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have received their official first update for Google Voice, the app Google produces to keep the whole world in with their own lovely collection of phone numbers. The Google Voice app for those that have been working with it for some time will not notice a whole lot different as far as functionality, but they will find their whole iPhone 5 4-inch display being utilized. This update comes with a collection of bug fixes as well.

The iPhone 5 version of Google Voice also works for legacy devices and remains the same for the iPad and iPad mini as well. You’ll find that the app works just as well or better than it ever has, especially considering its functionality hasn’t changed in several weeks and months. Google Voice allows users to work with their own phone number on many smartphones regardless of carrier or cellular plan and SIM.
